How to create notes

Updated over 8 months ago

1. Getting Started

Before you can create or view notes:

  1. Install the dScribe Guide Plugin

    • Download and install the dScribe Guide browser extension or plugin from your preferred browser’s extension store.

    • Once installed, you will see the dScribe Guide icon in your browser’s toolbar.

  2. Sign In

    • Click the dScribe Guide icon to open the extension panel.

    • Sign in with your dScribe Guide account or create one if you’re a new user.

With these steps, you’re ready to start creating and viewing notes!

2. Creating a Note and Adding It to the Page

dScribe Guide allows you to leave a note on any webpage surface. This is perfect for general instructions that apply to the entire page or site.

  1. Open the Page

    • Navigate to the webpage where you want to add a note.

  2. Launch dScribe Guide

    • Click the dScribe Guide icon in your browser’s toolbar to open the extension.

  3. Start Note Creation

    • In the extension panel, click the “Create Note” button.

  4. Enter Note Content

    • A pop-up or side panel will appear where you can type or paste your note content.

    • You can format text, add links, or embed images (if supported).

  5. Save the Note

    • Click “Save”.

    • A hotspot (icon) will appear on the page, representing your note.

Tip: If you make a mistake or want to edit your note, simply click edit note in the dScribe extension.

3. Creating a Note and Attaching It to a Page Element

For more specific guidance—such as explaining how to use a certain button, field, or menu—you can attach a note directly to an element on the page. This ensures that your note moves or stays aligned with that element.

  1. Open the Page and Launch dScribe Guide

    • Navigate to the target webpage and open the dScribe Guide extension panel.

  2. Create a New Note

    • Click “Create Note” > "Add note to page element" in the extension panel.

  3. Select the Element

    • Hover over the specific button, image, or field you want to attach the note to.

    • Click once to attach the note to this element.

  4. Add Note Content

    • A text editor will appear. Write or paste your instructions, guidance, or any relevant information for that element.

  5. Save the Note

    • Click “Save”.

    • The hotspot now appears right on top of (or aligned to) the chosen element. When users click that hotspot, your note will appear.

4. Viewing and Interacting with a Hotspot

From an end user’s perspective, seeing and interacting with a note is straightforward:

  1. Install the dScribe Guide Plugin

    • Users must also have the dScribe Guide plugin installed to see any hotspots and notes.

  2. Hotspot Icons

    • On any page containing dScribe Guide notes, the user will see hotspot icons (e.g., circular icons).

  3. Click the Hotspot

    • When a user clicks the hotspot, a pop-up box with the note content will appear.

    • The note might include text, links, images, or any additional formatting you provided.

  4. Closing the Note

    • The user can close the note by clicking outside the pop-up or on the “Close” (X) button (if present).

1. Keep Notes Concise: Users prefer short, direct instructions. If more detail is needed, consider linking to external documentation.

2. Do not create too many notes: too many notes are hard to maintain and hard to use.

3. Use Descriptive Titles: If the plugin allows titles or headings, use clear, descriptive labels so users know what the note is about before clicking.

4. Organize Notes Sequentially: If you have multiple notes on a complex page, label or number them in the order your users should view them.

5. Regularly Update Notes: If the webpage or app interface changes, don’t forget to update your notes accordingly.
